Heifitz suggests “getting off the dance floor and up on the balcony” as an analogy for gaining a clearer perspective of what’s going on for better strategic planning. Perhaps even better, Covey says that it’s essential to take time to “sharpen the saw” or “climb the trees” to survey the territory and make sure you’re working in the right forest. I agree and, in line with Friedman, taking this time away is reducing my anxiety and allowing me to see things with greater grace. Fun, yes. Educational, no doubt.
